Grune exists for happiness of the members. Professional members can provide best service to customers and can give a contribution to society growth. I believe that if you have a good time working, you will be able to perform better, get higher rewards, and have a happier life. I want to create an organization that can provide such a place.
After working as a programmer for three years at a Swiss company in Germany, I started independent company when I returned back to Japan. Later, to expand our development team we have established development bases in Yogyakarta and Bali - Indonesia. Indonesia currently has a population of over 260 million and is the fourth largest in the world after China, India and the United States. There are overwhelmingly young people who can be secured as excellent human resources for the future. Moreover, the recent economic development is tremendous, and there is no doubt that it will become very attractive as a market in the future. We will establish a base in the future and will actively develop services in Southeast Asia including Indonesia. This is another reason, Indonesia have the highest level of waves in the world, so the original reason for the start-up was because I wanted to surf there.
The significance of our organization is to have members gaining international experience and to live a happier life by working at Grune. The best thing that happened to me while working in Germany was that I was a foreigner. Some of my co-workers interacted with a discriminatory attitude. If you are born as a Japanese and you live in Japan, you will not have this experience. But under other circumstances I realized that Japanese people, including myself, are sometimes being profiled and discriminated against in Germany. Therefore, because of that experience I can understand how hard it can be to work in a foreign country. On the other hand, I felt the appreciation of the people who treated me equally and warmly in Germany. Some of them haven’t even invested in the current company and I was able to create an irreplaceable relationship that could have not been built just by visiting it as a tourist. I would like to offer the possibility that young members can have such a kind of experience just like mine in Germany.
Become a first-class engineer who can fight in the world. Leading programmers who can speak English and can live in any country around the world. One of the major factors is that the average annual salary of Japanese engineers is less than half of the annual salary of Silicon Valley engineers, over 10 million yen (94’000 USD). The latest technology and specifications are written in English. Therefore, if you search for bugs in Japanese the information is limited. Engineers who cannot speak English are less then second-class in the world. Rather than reading the official English tutorial, there is a certain number of Japanese engineers, who still use books to study and get information about programming in Python language for example. For that reason, it is way harder for Japanese people to get new information on how to learn new program-languages. In developing countries, such as Indonesia, everyone is reading and studying with English documents. This is why it grows so fast. In the future, Japanese engineers will have to compete with excellent programmers in developing countries whose salary levels vary greatly. The Japanese IT industry still has a Galapagos state where Japanese programmers develop and deliver to Japanese customers. Grune also has international development projects with European customers, so we can improve our skills on a global base.
So far we have doubled our sales every year. We will keep this pace and be ready for listing in 2022. We will have 50 people at the end of 2019 and 100 people the year after that. For people joining the company now it is a big opportunity to become executive and leading candidates. The base will be expanded not only to Yogyakarta and Bali (Indonesia), but also to Cebu (Philippines) and other countries. After spending a month in Cebu while practicing English, the members go to Yogyakarta, which is famous for its world heritage, and also enjoy working at a resort in Bali. I would like to enjoy international projects while living like I am traveling and grow through cross-cultural exchanges with team members from various backgrounds.
The main reason is to be able to working in an English-speaking country close to Japan and provide an environment where Japanese engineers can be immersed in English as well as in work. Young engineers can grow at an overwhelming speed if they do projects in English every day and live in Cebu, where English is the official language. Besides that, can Cebu Island in the Philippines be reached in just about 4 hours from Japan and it is famous for being a beautiful resort in Asia. I want to get the best out of the programmers who can work as long as there is an Internet and to have a fulfilling life (in my private life.) Also, it is simply interesting to have people from various countries in the team, and it is ideal that members of each country do exchanges and proceed with the projects while having fun. In the future, the Japanese market will shrink due the aging and declination of the population, and companies that cannot develop overseas markets will have lots of difficulties. We want to continue to be a company that can attack while expanding into other countries.
Most of the current members have never worked in English until they joined the company. It is difficult for people who are inexperienced and unable to speak English to communicate verbally. However, we basically use a chat tool to communicate with overseas bases. By using English daily at work, they can accumulate more frequently used phrases easily. To start you can use Google Translate. For example, "Please let me know when you finish updating the server.” You can use these simple phrases in daily chatting or task creation while using a translation tool, so that you can speak and improve your English conversation naturally. My director, Kashiba, hasn’t used English since he finished college and has never used English at work before, but he quickly was able to communicate in English. English conversation lessons are also offered free of charge twice a week during work by inviting external instructors. We are also classifying by level, so please practice business English as much as you can and use it as your own weapon.
